Africa Initiative for Rural Development (AIRD) continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to protecting and empowering South Sudan’s most vulnerable populations. In a significant step toward advancing the rights and well-being of adolescent girls, AIRD successfully conducted an emergency program for a first group of 22 girls aged 10 to 14 years at the Bor Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp.
Established in 2014, the Bor IDP Camp currently hosts thousands of individuals seeking protection from armed conflict and the effects of recurrent flooding. Within this challenging environment, adolescent girls remain among the most vulnerable, facing heightened risks of gender-based violence, disrupted education, and limited access to essential hygiene products.
In response to these pressing needs, AIRD’s emergency program targeted this first cohort of 22 adolescent girls with the distribution of dignity kits-a crucial intervention designed to restore hope, privacy, and self-worth. Each dignity kit contains reusable sanitary pads, underwear, a bar of soap, a torch, and other essential hygiene items. These items enable girls to safely manage their menstrual health with dignity, reducing the risk of infection and allowing them to continue their daily activities without interruption.
For many of these young girls, this marks the first time they have received such comprehensive support. The kits are not merely material provisionsthey represent a restoration of dignity and a reaffirmation that every girl deserves to feel safe, valued, and empowered.
AIRD remains steadfast in its mission to socially and economically transform South Sudan by strategically investing in children, girls, women, and youth. Through this emergency program in Bor IDP Camp, AIRD is tackling a deeply personal barrier head-on, ensuring that a natural biological process does not cost a young girl her future.
By reaching this first group of 22 girls, AIRD has laid the foundation for broader interventions aimed at creating safer communities where women and girls can live with equality, safety, and dignity.
